Captain MS Dhoni and vice-captain Virat Kohli got involve in an argument before the first ODI of the series at the team meeting reported by Hindi national daily Jagran Post. Indian team selection has taken everybody by surprise. On the eve of the match, MS Dhoni apparently said that he was finding difficult to play Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI as the Mumbai batsman only fit in the top three. And in the current Indian set up the number three positions are occupied by Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. He also said that as the Kanpur ODI would be played under daylight, so Axar Patel would not have to face any dew problem.
But, in the next morning when the team news came to know, there was surprise of surprise as what Dhoni said on the eve of the match and India's final playing XI were totally different that left journalist, fans and critic to murmur is the authority question MS Dhoni over team selection got over? and what did force Dhoni to pick up a team like this?
The answer came to know after the defeat.
Ambati Rayudu and Axar Patel excluded from the team while Ajinkya Rahane and Stuart Binny have replaced them.
The reason now revealed. In the team meeting, Team Director Ravi Shastri insisted MS Dhoni to take Ajinkya Rahane in the team as the batsman has been in good shape since the Test series victory in Sri Lanka. The bemused captain asked Shashtri how could I take him in the team? Where would he play?. But, as Shastri was too much persistent MS Dhoni agreed to pick Rahane in the team, but on one condition-Virat would have to play at no.4. But, Virat opposed Dhoni’s decision, he said that he could not bat at that positions. So, ego could be another reason for India's defeat as Virat got out scoring only 11 runs at the crucial juncture of the match. Kanpur fans constantly were chanting Virat Kohli's name, who was fielding at the boundary line. Virat sparked fuel in their chanting by urging them to chant his name with more noise.
MS Dhoni praised Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 82 balls 60, in the post-match press conference.
However, the team selection now displayed that MS Dhoni lost his authority over the Indian team.
